The Vélomaritime

The Vélomaritime is more than just a cycle route; it’s an invitation to completely switch off. The first reason to choose this itinerary is the exceptional diversity of its landscapes. In the Manche, the route alternates between wild coastline, lush marshes, and a rich historical heritage linked to World War II. It’s a unique way to discover the area while taking the time to notice details you often miss by car: the flight of a grey heron over the marshes, the scent of hedgerows, or the changing light over the oyster beds.

In 2026, cycling travel is emerging as the leading trend in sustainable tourism. Choosing the Vélomaritime means opting for a gentle mode of transport that respects the fragile environment of the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Nature Park. What’s more, the terrain in this part of Normandy is particularly accessible. Around Utah Beach and towards Carentan, the elevation gain is almost zero, making this stage ideal for families with children or for those new to cycle touring. It’s the promise of a ride without excessive effort, where the joy of discovery outweighs the physical challenge. Finally, the quality of the waymarking (green and white with the EV4 logo) guarantees stress-free navigation, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery near our campsite in Normandy.

What are the must-see points of interest around Utah Beach?

Camping Utah Beach is the perfect base for exploring two iconic stages of the Vélomaritime. Whether you head north or south, every kilometre brings its share of surprises:

Heading south: Towards Carentan-les-Marais (around 24 km): This stage is a deep dive into nature. Leaving Utah Beach, you’ll cross the Beauguillot Nature Reserve. It’s a leading birdwatching site where you can observe, from purpose-built hides, thousands of migratory birds. The path then winds through the polders and along the Haut-Dick canal to take you to the marina of Carentan. This medieval town, famous for its arcades and its Notre-Dame church, is the perfect stop for a terrace lunch before getting back on the road.
Heading north: Towards Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (around 35 km): As you ride up towards the tip of the Cotentin, the atmosphere becomes more maritime. You’ll pass through picturesque villages before reaching Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, voted “France’s Favourite Village” in 2019. Don’t miss the Vauban towers, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, standing guard opposite Tatihou Island. This is also where you can taste the famous Saint-Vaast oysters, renowned for their hazelnut flavour, directly from the producers.
Historical heritage: Throughout your route, the remains of the Atlantic Wall and the memorials will remind you of the historical importance of these places. Riding the Vélomaritime at Utah Beach is also a way to pay tribute to the liberators of 1944 while appreciating the freedom we enjoy today.
