Nez de Jobourg

An Extraordinary Setting

Located in the Manche department, about an hour’s drive from your Normandy campsite, Nez de Jobourg is a superb natural site featuring high cliffs and breathtaking landscapes. Nez de Jobourg is the second most visited place after Mont-Saint-Michel.

Its cliffs are among the highest in Western Europe. The highest point reaches 128 meters. From this summit, you can admire a stunning panorama stretching from Pointe de Goury to the Anglo-Saxon islands.

The coastal path along Nez de Jobourg is a true paradise for hikers and nature lovers. Indeed, this rocky promontory of Cap de la Hague offers the opportunity to take magnificent walks while breathing in the fresh sea air of the English Channel.

When admiring the view, it’s easy to understand that Nez de Jobourg was once a highly prized maritime surveillance point. It is indeed easy to monitor the arrival of ships.

Finally, budding geologists are always fascinated to discover that this area of the Cotentin dates from the Precambrian era. This means these high cliffs were shaped by nature two billion years ago!

Things to See

The Village of Jobourg

Nestled in the heart of the valley, time seems to have stood still in the village of Jobourg. The stone houses with slate roofs, the old bread oven, the stables… it’s a true journey back in time.

The Church of Jobourg

Notre-Dame de Jobourg is firmly anchored in the heart of the village. With an austere exterior of gray stone, the interior reveals lovely surprises.

Les Brequets

This name inherited from the Viking era refers to the large reefs that emerge off the cape. During walks or hikes, these rocky peaks offer a magnificent spectacle.

Wild Goats

Yes, in Jobourg the goats roam free! It’s not uncommon to come face to face with a Jobourg goat. They are very important for preserving the coastal ecosystem since their presence helps regulate the fauna and flora.

The Caves

The landscape is dotted with caves. All along the cliff, visitors discover these recesses created by the tide. Many legends surround these caves, such as the Trou aux Fées or the Grotte aux Lions.

Hikes

Nature lovers enjoy exploring the trails of the Norman coast, particularly Nez de Jobourg. First, the customs officers’ path offers a spectacular view. This dirt trail winds along the coast and is perfect for a short half-hour walk.

Next, the path leading to Baie d’Ecalgrain is ideal for wildlife and flora enthusiasts. Along the way, you’ll encounter many farm animals, including cows and sheep. At the end of the path that runs alongside the fields, a dirt trail takes visitors into the heart of the moorland. Once you reach Baie d’Ecalgrain, the view of the sea and the Goury lighthouse is delightfully picturesque.

Finally, the third hiking route is perfect for discovering the caves that line the cliff. Hikers set out in search of the fabulous treasures that smugglers allegedly hid deep in the three main caves: the Lion Cave, the Small Church Cave, and the Large Church Cave.
