A must-see zoo in Normandy
Jurques Zoo has been around for 44 years. Located between Caen and Vire, this site covers more than 20 hectares and is home to over 700 animals in total.
Hailing from Africa, Australia, China, and even Siberia, these wild species live in a protected environment.
Jurques Zoo also pursues an educational goal, notably with walk-through enclosures and keeper demonstrations to give the public a better understanding of the needs and lifestyles of the various residents.
Reptiles, primates, big cats, parrots… Species range from the most famous (zebras, giraffes, wolves) to the most spectacular: the hyacinth macaw (the world’s largest parrot), the Siberian tiger, and the white lion—a rare genetic mutation and the star of the zoo!
Visiting Jurques Zoo
Open from February to November, Jurques Zoo is an ideal family outing to introduce your children to protected species in a natural setting.
Allow about 2 hours for a full tour of the zoo, and check the times for certain activities: penguin feeding, monkey snack time, the lions’ and wolves’ feast…
Other activities are offered throughout the day. You can enter walk-through enclosures, such as the monkey habitat, to get a closer look.
The Australian aviary is also open to visitors. Finally, a snake handling workshop is available—a chance to overcome certain fears and misconceptions about these reptiles!
