Visit to the Mémorial de Caen

Built on an old bunker, the Mémorial de Caen stands just a stone’s throw from a place steeped in history: the D-Day Landing Beaches.
For 30 years, it has stood as a key testament to the 20th century and the wars that marked it.
A must-see to visit with your family or class for an immersion into the times that shaped Europe and the world of today.

The Memorial’s museum trails trace the key moments of the major conflicts of the 20th century, from the early signs of World War II to its global spread.
The highlights of this event are examined: the rise of fascism, the outbreak of the conflict through to “total war”, the organization of resistance networks, the Holocaust…

For an in-depth immersion, the exhibition features several period objects (costumes, photos), as well as various videos.
Not to be missed: “The Battle of Normandy: 100 days that changed the world,” which covers the D-Day landings.
A map inspired by the Churchill War Rooms is also on display, offering a striking illustration of the globalization of the conflict in 1941.

The Mémorial extends its retrospective beyond World War II with an area dedicated to the Cold War, where remnants of the conflict are displayed: airplane parts, a thermonuclear bomb, and even two sections of the Berlin Wall!

Finally, to walk through significant historical sites, continue your visit with the memorial gardens and descend into General Richter’s Underground Bunker.
And conclude your retrospective with the D-Day Landing Beaches, near the Mémorial.
