Itinerary idea to discover Normandy by motorhome

There are so many things to do and discover in Normandy that it’s not easy to choose the stops for a motorhome trip. Here’s an itinerary idea that will allow you to discover the Norman region through its history and landscapes, from Mont-Saint-Michel to Caen:

  • Avranches: after visiting the superb Mont-Saint-Michel and tasting the famous omelette of Mère Poulard, stop in Avranches and admire the view over the bay of the famous mount. For a breathtaking panorama, head to the botanical garden. From up there, you’ll have a stunning view of the surroundings. Twelve themed gardens will introduce you to flora from around the world.
  • Granville: then head northwest and discover the “Corsair City” whose ramparts date back to around 1450. Also nicknamed the “Monaco of the North,” this seaside town is home to many treasures. Fashion lovers will visit Christian Dior’s childhood home, now a museum. And for a fun family moment, consider the Granville aquarium.
  • Barfleur: heading toward Barfleur, you’ll cross the Cotentin natural park where you can get some fresh air and recharge in nature. The marshes are home to diverse wildlife and especially many birds. Upon arriving in Barfleur, you’ll be charmed by its picturesque and typically Norman fishing port. Don’t hesitate to stop at one of the restaurants nestled in the old streets to taste Barfleur’s wild mussels in cream.
  • D-Day beaches: do you know the 5 D-Day beaches? Sword Beach, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, Omaha Beach and of course, Utah Beach where your Normandy campsite is located. Relive the longest day by traveling along the coast to Ouistreham and discover the Pegasus Bridge in Bénouville, the various military cemeteries or Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first liberated towns.
  • Caen: extend your discovery of Lower Normandy by visiting the magnificent city of Caen and its historical heritage: William the Conqueror’s castle, Men’s Abbey and Women’s Abbey, World War II memorial… all of French history gathered in one city! And if you still have some time, don’t hesitate to push on to Bayeux where you can admire its famous medieval tapestry.
